Lay Workers
Dozens of devoted laymen, sponsored through MPI, work under the supervision of local pastors to raise up groups of believers in remote, unreached places throughout Mexico, Belize, Guatemala and Ghana. They receive stipends up to $190 per month.
Some travel by bus, others by bicycle, but most hike for many hours over rough mountain trails to reach their destinations.
Upon reaching a village, they visit each home, finding families interested in studying the Bible. Laymen often take their children along to train them as Bible workers.
Interested neighbors begin meeting regularly in someone’s home to hear the Good News.
As layman Pedro Intzín shares Scriptural health principles with members of the Zoque tribe, they have a good laugh when he reads Deuteronomy 23:13; “As part of your equipment have something to dig with, and when you relieve yourself, dig a hole and cover up your excrement.”
Some families prefer to study the Bible outside of their dark, smoky huts, enjoying the fresh air and nature’s beauty.
Before long new believers put together a simple house of worship and form a church company.
New believers begin sharing their faith with others right away. MPI provides literature and colorful magazines for outreach, and people eagerly grab them up!
These children, ages 6 and 4, follow the example of their dad, visiting unbelieving neighbors, reciting Bible verses and praying. They reach hardened hearts, resulting in baptisms.
Joyfully following the example of Jesus, new converts are baptized in cold streams, calm lakes, rushing rivers and ocean waves. At times men form a line and join hands to keep the candidates from washing downriver!
Sacrifice, hardships and persecution face our laymen. But they move forward with courage, and time after time miracles take place to save them.
One layman gained the trust of four bandit murderers, who eventually exchanged their guns for Bibles. They became leaders of a newly-established church in their village.
